On 24th December, 1914, the 2nd Wiltshire battalion of 21 Brigade, 7th Division moved into trenches at Fleurbaix, to the south-west of Armentières. Records show that George Powell was killed here on Christmas Day, when, according to the battalion diary there was no firing as an unofficial truce was observed with both sides meeting in no-man’s-land to bury the dead, so there is no explanation for his death. |
